The Dangers of Over Sharing

Are you sharing too much online? Could the information you share be enough for an outsider to track you down?

uKnowKids, a company offering online monitoring software for parents, have produced an infographic entitled 'Cyberstalking'. It contains three rather alarming case studies from the founders of Dell and Internet security firm Kapersky of how easily (and often unknowingly) some people share information online - in one of the cases, over-sharing of information led to a child being kidnapped. The child was returned unharmed, and while someone is unlikely to want to kidnap you, you should still take precautions to protect your information.

Start by delving into Facebook's Privacy Settings and making sure that your Twitter Settings are how you want them. Then it's just a case of making sure you're not sharing important things like your home location by checking in on Facebook or on Foursquare, and by turning off the location when sharing content on Facebook and Twitter. If you regularly take photos and upload them to a photo sharing service such as Flikr, make sure the location the photo was taken at is not shared - you might not know this, but smartphones can attach location data to every photo and video you take, so have a look through your settings.

In the mean time, here's the infographic from uKnowKids. Just click on it to view the full version:
